Friday 12/27 report

Quick look at lake and fishing conditions. 8 to 10 in of snow covering over 10 in of ice no open water reported. Lyman's has his ice shanties on the lake east bay has fishermen in front of eddies bar and harveys marine. Trails have been groomed so fishing and snowmobiling should be great.

Friday the 13 ice report

My ice fishing source ICJ reported 8 to 10 in. of ice. Today's catch between 3 men was 3 keeper eyes 5 small mouth 2 small pike. Fishermen are out front of the ACE hole at the horseshoe weed bed as I type this report.

Tuesday 12/10/13 ice fishing report

On my morning walk I Ran into a ice fisherman I will call Ice fishin Jack. He reported 5 to 7 in of ice. Last night he caught 8 eyes 2 were keepers. He had to quit early this morning but had a nice one on that got away. I will try to get more reports from him and pass them on.

Happy Thanksgiving day to all fans and readers of this post.

The water is hard and has been for several days. Report of 3 in. of ice.

This will be my summer fishing 2013 season ending report.

I spent 93 days on the water at 3 to 4 hours a day trolling and drifting.

I caught 161 keeper eyes and 519 small eyes. In addition to the eyes my

daily tallies show 684  non walleyes caught making a total of over 1300

total fish caught by me. I fished with guest on 23 of the 93 days and they

added another 200 fish t0 this total.

My thoughts were this was a better than average year and feel that next year

should prove to be a good fishing year.

Look for post concerning ice fish as the reports come to me.

I hope to keep posting next year during soft water times.

Tuesday 9/24 report

First day fishing since Labor day. Cool flat morning only fished 2 1/2 hours.

1 keeper eye 1 small eye and a tiny perch 2 more fish on but couldn't land them.

Hope to get a few more days of fishing the boat will come out first weekend in Oct.

The day after labor day fish fry Em son of ace and ace back in the boat by 7:15.

Foggy cool choppy 3 hours of fishing 19 fish 2 keeper eyes 6 small eyes 6 small perch

4 rock bass 1 pike. Em did well she boated both keepers. Will try again MONDAY.

Fish fry was great lots of friends and great food and fun.

Cloudy light NE wind Ace Bill and granddaughter Em fished from 7:15 until 9:45.

Friday report 8/30

Little breezy taking the day off to get ready for labor day fish fry for neighbors family and friends.

We expect 30 or more people every will have fun and fish.

Thursday 8/29 report

Calm warm start with fog moving in at around 8:30.

Fish were active early but shut down when the fog moved in.

19 fish caught no keeper eyes. 6 small eyes 4 perch 3 pike 2 sun fish 2 rock bass.

Not a bad day for 3 hours of fishing.

After 4 days of not fishing got back on the water this morning.

Fished 4 1/2 hours in light winds and cloudy skies.

3 keeper eyes 13 small eyes 1 each crappie pike gill sun fish large mouth rock bass

Weather looks good for tomorrow.

5 hours of trolling total fish 21. 3 keeper eyes 9 small eyes 2 pike 2 bass 2 rock bass

2 sun fish 1 gill. Cool calm start in front of the public launch not many fish

moved out to my NS troll area bite picked up . Not the number of fish I hoped for but not bad.

The lake was treated for weed control may slow the bite will try in the morning with fishing girl.

Wednesday 8/21 and Thursday 8/22 report

Wednesday started with white caps and ended the same way no fishing.

Thursday still breezy went out for three hours drifting and trolling.

2 keeper eyes 1 crappie in the live well. 1 small eye 3 pike 3 sun fish

and 1 gill 1 small mouth 1 rock bass were also caught.

Tuesday 8/20 report

Spent 3 1/2 hours searching for keepers caught 23 fish only 1 keeper eye.

10 small eyes 3 pike 3 perch 2 gills 2 sun fish 2 rock bass.

Moved around caught fish at every edge and with different color blades

the keepers were hiding.

Monday 8/19 report

28 fish this morning from6:40 until 11 AM.

3 keeper eyes a 12 in perch and a 12 in crappie in the live well.

I'm still trolling the weed edge in front of the public launch off county rd. 100.

Shinny blades with 1/2 crawler working best. Water temp has come up into the 70's

fish should stay good until the next cool front.

Sunday 8/18 report

One of my best days this year. Trolled from 6:45 to 10:45 caught 29 fish.

5 keeper eyes 16 small eyes 3 sunfish 1 each perch large mouth small mouth

blue gill crappie. Orange shiny and chartreuse blades all working bouth leaches and worms caught

many fish.

Calm sunny weather fish were all caught in and around weed edge in front of boat launch

off county

rd. 100.

Saturday 8/17 report

On the lake fishing by 6:40 alone in the boat. Flat and warmer 48 trolled until 11:20 26 fish.

No keeper eyes but stayed busy catching other fish.

11 small eyes 3 large mouth 3 pike 3 sun fish 2 gills 2 rock bass 1 perch 1 crappie.

Summer is returning for the next 8 to 10 days fishing will improve.

7:15 start calm cool. Fishing with my fishing girl SE edge of middle grounds bite was slow only 14 fish in 4 hours. 7 small eyes 2 pike 2sun fish 2 rock bass 1 perch  ...Weather warming for the
next week fishing should improve.

Started fishing at 6:50 with my fishing girl we fished until 10:30.

1 keeper eye 5 small eyes 4 pike 2 largemouth 2 rock bass 2 sun fish.

Cold start 39 degrees light wind partly cloudy trolled the edge by the public launch

off  east Houghton lake dr. (county rd. 100). Shinny blades worked best.

 Big Jon and Ace on a nice calm warm morning fished 3 1/2 hours. 

Boated about 20 fish Jon had 2 keeper eyes no keepers for the ace.

Small eyes and pike with rock bass perch sun fish gills and a nice small mouth were also caught.

Cool and calm just me in the boat started in my honey hole area.

A few small fish moved to SE edge of middle ground things picked up.

Quit at 11:35 with 5 keeper eyes 8 small eyes 6 pike 2 perch 2 rock bass 2 gills 1 sun fish.

Worms with shinny blades worked well. Water temp has come up 3 degrees  bite improving.

Cool and calm this morning.my son and I fished about 5 hours caught 15 fish.

Cool light NW wind started at 6:30 fish on while I was baiting line two.

Trolled SE from Songers towards launch caught nice 18 small mouth

and few other fish wind picked up started drifting ended with 1 keeper eye

6 small eyes 6 pan fish 2 perch 2 pike and the small mouth.

Hope the fish start biting if it warms up.

Friday Jon and I fished 3 hours caught about a dozen small fish only 2 were small eyes.

Cool weather has slowed the bite it should pick up when it warms up.

Cloudy cool light wind to start fished 4 1/2 hours caught 25 fish.

Changed blade color shinny worked well. No keeper eyes but 1 pike was close to 30 in.

Calm cool start warmed up but the bite was slow.

Looks like rain and wind for Sunday. Cold front moving through should warm up Monday or Tuesday.

Cold front coming through Wednesday bite was slow.

Cool light wind from SE fished the public launch weed edge off county rd. 100.

Caught 5 keeper eyes 9 small eyes 2 pike 1 perch 1 crappie in 1 hour and 45 min.

Chartreuse still good choice worms out fished leaches.

Pictured my keepers 4 eyes 1 perch from a catch of 28 fish in 4 hours.

Fish are still hitting chartreus blades in and around weeds from 9 to 12 feet.

1/2 crawler and leaches work for me. Trolling produced the keepers but drifting

kept me very busy trying to keep bait on the hooks.

wednesday 7/17 report

Short day on the water 6 until 9. Warm light chop trolled my NS drift edge .

Caught 2 keeper eyes 6 small eyes and 9 other pan fish with a nice small mouth to round out the trip.

Still using chartreuse blades. Wind was out of the SW making this a good drifting edge one drift 3 small fish in 5 min. wish I had more time.

Hot and calm lines in by 6 out before 10.

Trolled from Songers to public launch then along edge towards Prudenville.

Caught over 25 fish busy day 2 keeper eyes 10 small eyes and rock bass sun fish gills perch and small mouth bass no pike.

Chartreuse blades working best. Small fish cost me over a dozen worms.

Warm sunny start at 6:30 fished until about 11 caught 22 fish.

3 keeper eyes 8 small eyes 5 pike (a 27 in for Dan) 3 sunfish

1 gill 1 small mouth 1 perch. Hot when I quit.

Dimpled chartreuse blade worked best with 1/2 crawler.

Jon and Ace 6 until 9:30 slow fishing 1 keeper eye 5 small eyes 5 rock bass 2 perch 1 sun fish.

Light chop from SE tried both trolling and drifting  bite was slow we made several color changes and

fished several weed edges maybe tomorrow will be better.

Sunday  son in law John and young lady friend Brooke fished about 3 hours caught about a dozen fish. This was Brooks first time on Houghton lake she caught 1 keeper eye 1 small eye 1 perch and 1 sun fish not bad for an 11 year old she shows promise of becoming a good fishing girl.

Monday no fishing  rain pending started about 9 lasted until 3 will try on Tuesday.

4 th of July report 2013

By myself this morning fishing SE edge of the middle grounds for 4 hours.

Days catch 2 keeper eyes 10 small eyes 2 pike 3 perch 3 rock bass 2 gills 1 large mouth.

A dozen boats in this area this morning the wind made trolling difficult.

Not a bad day 2 perch were over 10 inches. I should have company in the boat for the weekend.

Wednesday 7/3 report

Cloudy and cool with NE wind choppy when I went to my fishing area.

Trolled about 3 hours had rain but kept fishing caught 3 keeper eyes 2 small eyes 3 pan fish.

Weather like yesterday with stiff NE wind tried same spot SE of the middle grounds.

Boat control was the key to catching fish stayed on the north edge trolling east to west .

Caught 5 keeper eyes 11 small eyes 9 perch 3 pike 2 gills 1 sun fish and 1 nice smallmouth.

Yellow working best fish about 5 hours bumpy ride in.

Started out at 6 AM the water was quit choppy had a ruff ride out to SE edge of the middle grounds.

Fished about 3 hours trolling and drifting caught 2 keeper eyes 8 small eyes 6 pike 5 perch 1 bass.

trolling produced most fish yellow blades working well.

Rain this morning no fishing after noon try by the neighbors the wind was up poor conditions tomorrow is another day.

No fishing worked a large fish fry with the Chief and Coon Kissing Woman at their home over 50 guest eating panko coated walleye. Rain held off fun was had by all thanks to all the help and great friends that give me reason to fish.

Days catch ready for cleaning. 5 keeper eyes 3 nice perch also caught 11 small eyes
2 other perch 3 rock bass 1 sunfish. Trolled SE edge same as Wed. fished 3 hours 15 min.

Calm warm and buggy just like summer fished SE edge of middle grounds for 4 hours.

Caught 3 keeper eyes 6 small eyes 2 perch 1 gill 1 rock bass.

This area has a lot of weed growth so a lot of time is spent clearing lines but the fish are here.

Leaches worked best on harnesses with yellow blades.

Thusday 6/25 report

Cloudy choppy fished about 1 hour from 6 till 7 rain came caught 1 keeper eyes 2 small eyes 2 perch 1 gill. Drifted action was slow. I'll try again in the morning.

Monday 6/24 report

Busy weekend over back to my regular fishing this morning.
Lines in by 5:55 trolling into brisk SW wind boat control is a problem.
Drifted for awhile both methods caught fish but bite was slow.
2 keeper eyes 4 small eyes 4 perch 1 gill 1 rock bass quit by 10.
Hope to do better tomorrow.

Sunday 6/23 report

No fishing. Now the rest of the story about the Jon Green Walleye Classic.
Big Jon started us all out at 6 AM. Five boats boat 1 the Warren trio Joe Jake and Drew .this team tried to triple team the rest of us didn't quite work but they came close they had 3 keeper eyes at the
11AM measuring and had caught many other fish. Boat 2 Big Jon and Clarke the whizz Kid started fast with 3 early keeper eyes from one of Aces hot spots that was their morning total.
Boat 3 Jere Pain Train Green and Leelanau Doug fishing the same hot spot had 5 keeper eyes
including Pain Train big fish of the day 19 1/2 in. at the early measuring. Boat 4 Chief and Son of Ace 2 keeper eyes. Ace and Pro Bono Aaron measured 4 keepers at the same time. Lunch break
courtesy of host Big Jon then back to fishing from 1 until 4 PM final measuring.
All boats caught fish but the only keepers were caught and brought in for measuring was by the winning team of Ace and Pro Bono. 8 total 8 keeper eyes over 130 inches they were the trophy winners. After fishing fish fry was enjoyed by all. Hopping for more boats next year.

The Pain Train made 100 bucks for his big fish.

Saturday 6/22 report

Local resident Jon Green organized a walleye fishing tournament, taking place on June 22, 2013, called the First Annual Jon Green Walleye Classic.

 

In 5 boats, there were 11 participants.

 

The totals for the day included 21 keeper walleye among over a hundred other fish. 

 

Scoring to determine the winner was based on keeper walleye length. 

 

The winners were Bill Simmons and Aaron Hilgendorf, with 8 keepers, over 120 inches in length. 

 

The biggest fish winner was Jere Green, landing a 19 inch walleye.    

 

Closing ceremonies were held at a fish fry in the early evening. 

Friday 6/21 report

Ace and the Green brothers on the lake around 6 off around 10 about 20 fish.
Jon using the Ace's lures caught 3 keepers  allowed his brother to change so he started
catching fish 1 keeper eye and many small eyes. Tomorrow watch for results of the Jon Green
walleye classic.

Thursday 6/20 report

Fishing slowed hit 4 different edges before I finally found some fish.
Total1keeper eye 8 small eyes 2 pike 1 gill. Chief reported 4 keeper eyes by 8 AM.
Two other boats said fishing was slow.

Wednesday 6/19 report

Picture tells the story 5 keeper eyes. I also caught 14 small eyes and a pike.
Morning was cool(39) no wind light fog fished from 5:50 to 10:15 trolling 3
different weed edges all held fish shinny blades and worms worked best.

Tuesday 6/18 report

Cool light NE wind to start. Lines in by 5:45 trolling east towards the public launch.
Fish were active caught 17 eyes 2 gills 1 sunfish 1 large mouth 1 crappie by 10.
Only 1keeper eye and the crappie was 13 1/2 inches. Wind picked up quit fishing.
Purple blades on my crawler harness worked best tipped with 1/2 crawler.

Not much to report but unstable weather rain wind thunder storms every time it looked ok to fish a
another front would pass through  no fishing.

Father's day fishing with Cathy and Sam. Misty windy fished 2hours drifting out front
We caught 7 fish Sam had the only keeper eye. We were wet from the waves on every
move so we quit and came in early. Report from Papa's bait has limits caught in the weeds
in front of the Cut river using slip bobbers with crawlers and leaches both working.

Saturday 6/15 report

Fathers day weekend fishing with Cathy my fishing girl at 6AM until 11AM.
Came in with 6 keeper eyes and 2 nice perch (1 over 12 in) 23 total fish.
Aces was out fished 13 to 10 . She used a special color that's cheating.

Friday 6/12 report

On the lake with Big Jon by 5:45. N wind light chop trolled from Songers to the public launch.
Caught a few fish not great moved towards public launch trolled and drifted towards Prudenville
caught a few more fish. Ended with 2 keeper eyes 8 small eyes 4 pike 3 p3rch 1 small mouth
1 large mouth. Jon finely caught some fish after changing color per instruction final score 14 to 4.
Next week end watch for results of the 2013 Jon Green Walleye Classic.

Thursday 6/13 report

NNE wind started at 5:50 out front trolling towards the east along weed edge.

Caught 1 keeper and 1 small eye on the first pass turned caught a small eye and a pike.

Wind had picked up tried drifting not much action moved drifted another edge same results.

Headed home trolling into the wind picked up another keeper and 11 in perch.

Day total 2 keeper eyes 6 small eyes 3 perch 1 pike 1 rock bass.

Another fisherman caught 5 keeper eyes drifting weeds out front.

He use single hook with split shot and worms and crawlers.

Slow start changed to shinny blades fish started hitting.

Took a chance with the weather and lost caught 1 small eye fishing 20 min. rain came I got wet and quit. I'll try in the morning.

The small mouth was 19 1/2 in. largest I've ever caught.  No pictures he is back in the lake.

Cool calm clear start at 5:45. Worked the weed edge by the county 100 boat launch
bite was slow small fish. Moved to the next weed edge and trolled west towards Songer's
Bite was a little better I trolled this edge until 11:00 AM

Cloudy cool light NE winds. Started trolling at public launch ESE towards Prudenville not much action  turned back towards the launch fish turned on. Fished from 6 am to 9:45 caught 19 fish.
4 keeper eyes 6 small eyes 7 pike (3 over 24 in.) 1 crappie over 13 in 1 large mouth.
Leaches and worms both worked well. This weed edge is not fished very heavy and as
the weather warms holds a lot of fish.

Cool cloudy almost calm start at 6AM.

trolled out to my NS area fish not active few small ones.

Moved to SE edge of Middle grounds trolled and then drifted when wind increased.

Fishing was slow but I was able to put 3 keeper eyes, 2 nice pan fish and a perch in the live well.

Days count was 14 eyes 4 perch 3 pan fish 1 pike 1 small mouth 1 large mouth.

6 hours fishing time.

Fished from 6 until 9:50 cold light NE wind .

Fish not active caught 3 small eyes 3 perch 1 pike.

Chief reported about the same.

May flies hatching in the PM fishing should be good in wed. morning

Posting early limited out by 9:30 AM.

Cold choppy NW wind the fish were at my north south drift area.

caught 5 keeper eyes 5 small eyes 1 perch (almost 12 in.) and 1 pike in 2and 1/2 hours.

Copper, purple, and raspberry blades tipped with 1/2 crawler was bait used.

Sunday 6/2 report

Cool damp windy fished about 2 hours with big Jon.

Drifted out front at the horseshoe weed bed caught 13 fish.

7 small eyes 2 pike 2 gills 1 crappie 1 perch.

Wind was 15 mph with gust to over 20 from NW not much fun quit early.

Saturday 6/1 report

Thunder showers early cleared out by 7:30 big Jon  and Ace hit the water at 8:00.

Caught about 30 fish total   before wind made trolling to hard.

5 keeper eyes and a nice perch in the well when we came in.

Fish fly hatch has started should do good if we can get out in the morning

worms worked best copper blades and purple blades we the way to go.

Hard rain last night high winds no fishing.

Made it out lines in by 6:10. Light chop trolled NE edge of middle grounds not much going on.
Tried SE corner and started catching fish. wind picked up started drifting no hits went back to trolling.

Boat control was hard but I caught 1 keeper eye 7 small eyes 3 pike and 2 large mouth 1 10 in perch and 1 sun fish. Quit at 9:50.

Dave in the boat for his second day with me at 6AM.

Fished the same area as yesterday fish were still biting but not the keepers.

We finally got one keeper eye we trolled and drifted catching many fish

purple with worms working best.

Dave out fished us 2 keepers and about 15 misc fish.

Saturday 5/25 report

Busy week end planed Ace and Son of Ace fished for three hours in AM.

18 total fish caught no keeper eyes. Cold light N wind not great but good fishing.

Big Jon was a little late to make the morning fish but went later after the work

was done and caught 4 small eyes.

Chief did not fish. I will have a full boat in the morning.

Cold morning with N wind went out before 6 AM trolled east edge of middle grounds,

the wind picked up had to drift worked well drifting right along the weeds.

Caught 3 keeper eyes 5 pike 2 perch 1 rock bass 1 large mouth.

Quit after 5 drifts became to cold for comfort.

3 nasty rainy days in a row frost possible tonight.

Lines in by 6 out at 10 3 keeper eyes 6 small eyes 9 pike 1 large mouth.

Cloudy light S wind worked the NE corner of the middle grounds.

Color copper, gold and purple. blades crawlers and leaches worked equally well.

Calm cool lines in 6:05 trolling where I ended yesterday caught  5 fish in first hour no keepers.

Moved around looking for weed growth ended at east edge of middle ground.

End of fishing count 1 keeper eye (almost 19 in.) 5 small eyes 8 pike.

Lake was great easy trolling warm great day.

6:05 lines in trolling towards public launch from songers 1 small eye.

Moved out to Fridays spot 4 small eyes 1 keeper eye 2 small pike.

Cool with light NE chop trolled out front SW on my summer edge. not much going on until I made a turn to the SE and found some weeds. I caught 1 keper eye 9 small eyes and 2 pike,(one pike was fat and about 27 in.) I will try in the morning if it don't rain.

3 1/2 hours of trolling 1 small eye. Fish not active talked to the Chief and Bob they both caught 1 keeper eye. Threatened law suits because I infringed on their riparian rights. Hope the wind is down tomorrow. Water temp is down 8 degrees from last week making for a slow bite.

Not quite as many fish today. Weather was great. trolled from 6:15 to 10.

2 keeper eyes 2 small eyes 12 pike 2 large mouth.

Fish have moved farther out in the lake not much action between cut river and flint rd.

Trolled south west along edge from Flint road towards tip of long point .

Fish were active along this edge. Talked to the Chief he boated 14 small eyes

some crappies and pike.

4 keeper eyes 6 small eyes 16 pike 5 large mouth 1 each smallie,rockie, gill.

Great fishing clear sky calm water. Fished cut river to flint road along weed edge.

I was very busy my new ribbed copper blades worked best tipped with 1/2 crawler.

Shinny with leaches also caught fish. Water temp is over 60 so the fish are more active.

Another great morning. Lake calm sky clear lines in 6:20.

Trolled the edge from cut river to flint rd 4 rounds.

1 keeper eye 1 small eye 2 large mouth 2 crappie i rockie 6 pike.

The chief caught 2 keepers and misc. fish at his spot.

We are being spoiled by this nice weather.

6:10 AM lines in trolled edge from public launch SE 1 small bass turned

and trolled back to in front of house then turned towards tower to my honey hole 1 small eye.

Motored to the cut river edge trolled to flint rd. and back several times.

2 keeper eyes 9 pike 2 more bass 1 gill. total fish 16 not to bad after yesterdays poor fishing.

Third day in a row the lake has been flat in the morning.

Had lines in by 6:15 started catching fish early stayed busy for the next 4 1/2 hours.

Total catch 2 keeper eyes 2 small eyes 9 pike 8 largemouth 1 smallie 1 rock bass 1 gill.

Another nice day light wind sunny skys.

Trolled from the cut river to flint road for 4 hours.

Caught another keeper eye 7 pike 2 large mouths lost a big crappie at the boat.

Canal fishing for crappies is picking up nice sized crappie hitting on minnows.

Great day on the lake weather was almost to warm.

Light wind trolled completely around the middle grounds.

Day 2 same 3 men in the boat only 2 fish caught.

Cool morning light wind from the south water temp 48.

Trolled in front of the public launch then moved to the edge

from sportsman's bait past cut river towards the chief house

both fish were landed there 1 smallie and one large mouth.

Talked to others there results were the same a few bass.

Opening day clear light wind cool.

Ace Son of Ace and Big Jon in the boat.

Departed dock at 7:00 am.

Trolled 4 hours hunting for fish caught 2 smallies and 1 large mouth.

A lot of boats for opening day water temp at 44 degrees.

Talked later with another group they caught 2 small eyes a pike and some bass

About what was expected. tomorrow is another day.

Ace new boat thanks to son of ace and his hard work.

We should be fishing by 7 AM . Water is high and dirty.

Fishing will be slow but we should catch something.

2013 first pre fish report

Friday opening day 2 weeks away snowing now but ice finally moving out.

The dock should go in next weekend.

My reconditioned boat will also be ready I will send pictures.

Hopping for another great season, I'll keep everyone posted.

Windy light coating of snow on about 10 in. of ice not much weekday fishing.

Warming trend coming then turning cold on Sunday.

Ice should be OK this weekend and build right up to tip up town .

First weekend brings the drag races they will be a great draw and cool to watch.

Yesterday many were visible from our deck.
